Bicycle Lock Incident Delays Mayor’s Departure for Grant Hearing

By Staff Report | Carroway Island / Onancock

A minor but consequential incident involving a secured bicycle resulted in an unexpected delay for the Carroway Island mayor earlier this week, briefly placing at risk his scheduled appearance at a grant hearing in Accomack County.

The situation arose when the mayor’s bicycle, left near the ferry landing, was discovered to have been fastened with an additional lock not belonging to him. The timing proved particularly unfavorable, as the mayor was preparing to depart on the afternoon ferry to attend a hearing concerning funding for necessary repairs to the island’s airport runway.

Initial confusion at the scene gave way to a short period of urgency, as attempts to locate the source of the lock or otherwise remove it were unsuccessful within the available time.

It was later determined that the lock had been placed by Abraham Pike, who, according to those familiar with the matter, had secured what he believed to be his own bicycle under routine circumstances.

“It appears to have been a matter of proximity rather than intention,” one observer noted.

By the time the situation was understood, the ferry had already departed.

In response, local waterman Bob Crowely offered immediate assistance, transporting the mayor across the sound aboard what was described by several as a “modified” crab boat. The vessel, known among some for its speed, allowed the mayor to arrive at the Accomack courthouse with limited time to spare.

Witnesses indicated that the crossing was completed under conditions described as “direct” and “without unnecessary delay.”

“He made it,” one resident said. “That was the important part.”

The hearing, which concerns the allocation of funds for runway repairs at the Carroway airstrip, proceeded as scheduled. As of this writing, no official determination regarding the grant has been announced.

The bicycle in question was later released without damage. No further action has been taken.

While the incident was resolved without lasting consequence, it has prompted some quiet reflection among residents regarding the coordination of shared spaces, particularly in areas of regular use.

“Timing matters,” one resident observed. “Even in small things.”
