Ferry Wharf Disturbance Ends in Citation and Unexpected Disrobing

CARROWAY ISLAND, VA — There was a jarring disturbance at the ferry wharf last Tuesday afternoon, just as the Carroway Island ferry, under the command of Captain Duke Crowley, was easing into the Carroway Island ferry slip with what witnesses described as “more dignity than speed.”
At approximately the same moment, two visiting Tangier Island watermen, reportedly “coming in with confidence not supported by distance”, approached the dock at a pace later described by the Dock Office as “optimistic.” Their vessel made light but unmistakable contact with the ferry’s starboard side, producing a hollow thud that several onlookers compared to “a crab pot meeting its future.”
What followed was an exchange of words that escalated with unusual efficiency.
It was alleged that Captain Crowley referred to the visitors as “Tangerines,” a term not recognized in any official maritime code but understood locally to be both inaccurate and unhelpful. The two watermen responded in kind, reportedly calling the Captain “seedy,” a description that, while botanically vague, was received with clear offense.
Before the matter could progress to anything more structured, Dock Master Harold Beasley attempted to intervene. Witnesses agree that Mr. Beasley approached with authority but departed the scene with considerably less.
While stepping between the parties, Mr. Beasley’s Lycra shorts became entangled on a dock cleat, an interaction that proved decisive. The garment failed to maintain its contractual obligations, resulting in the Dock Master entering the water abruptly and without trousers.
Several witnesses noted that the fall itself was “clean,” but the aftermath “raised broader questions about fabric selection in maritime oversight roles.”
To his credit, Mr. Beasley resurfaced quickly and, with the assistance of the two visiting watermen (whose demeanor reportedly shifted to “practical”), was helped back onto the dock. He secured a life jacket from the dock box, which he wore at waist level in a configuration not previously observed in standard safety literature.
Meanwhile, patrons at Hadie’s Seafood Shack, drawn by the rising volume and a phrase described only as “regionally inventive,” contacted Mayor Ellsworth P. Dunning, who arrived on scene within minutes.
After a brief assessment, during which the Mayor was seen removing his glasses, replacing them, and then removing them again, all four individuals were cited for disturbing the peace.
They are scheduled to appear before the Community Council at 8:00 PM next Thursday.

No serious injuries were reported, though the Dock Office has since issued a general advisory regarding “secure garments in active docking zones.”
The ferry resumed its schedule shortly thereafter, departing only nine minutes behind, which regular passengers described as “within tolerance.”
