Hadie’s Fish Shack Announces Summer Menu
By Ledger Staff | Wharf District
Hadie’s Fish Shack, the long-standing harbor-side restaurant known for its paper trays, screened porch, and refusal to discuss substitutions beyond a certain point, has released its summer menu ahead of the holiday weekend.
The seasonal update introduces several new items while preserving the dishes regulars expect, including the fried flounder basket, soft-shell sandwich, and chowder served “as available and as intended.”
Located just past the public dock and across from the building everyone still calls the ice house, Hadie’s has operated in one form or another for decades, attracting island residents, weekend boaters, day-trippers from the mainland, and those who stop only because someone told them they should.
This year’s menu leans slightly broader, with expanded lunch offerings, a later supper window on Fridays, and several items described in language that has already prompted discussion.
The most talked-about addition is the Carroway Platter, a composite meal featuring fried oysters, catfish, slaw, hush puppies, stewed tomatoes, and what the menu simply identifies as “market accompaniment.”
Another new item, the Wharf Sandwich, includes blackened local fish, sharp remoulade, shaved lettuce, and pickled vegetables on a toasted roll. The restaurant notes that the sandwich may be served with fries, slaw, or “whatever the kitchen has agreed is best at that hour.”
Among returning favorites is Hadie’s chowder, still listed without regional designation, a decision the restaurant has maintained for years. When asked whether the recipe is more properly considered Eastern Shore, tidewater, or its own category entirely, a server replied, “People come here to eat it, not resolve it.”
The dessert board will again include Carroway pie, lemon pie, peach cobbler, and the shack’s well-known bread pudding, which appears each summer under slightly different description but with broadly familiar consequences.
Prices have increased modestly, which management attributed to seafood costs, fuel, paper goods, oil, dock repairs, and “everything else the season now requires.”
Even so, lines are expected to remain strong once ferry traffic picks up. Customers are encouraged to order at the counter, keep ticket numbers visible, and avoid crowding the pickup window during peak periods, particularly after church on Sundays and just before the last reliable evening boat.
