New Summer Carroway-to-Onancock Ferry Schedule Released

Seasonal ferry service between Carroway Island and Onancock will resume expanded summer hours beginning Memorial Day weekend, according to notices posted Tuesday at the terminal office, outside Harker’s Market, and briefly on the back door of the old feed building before being removed by weather.

The revised schedule includes additional morning crossings, extended late-day return service, and a new Friday evening departure intended to accommodate restaurant traffic, supply runs, visitors unfamiliar with local timing, and those who “prefer not to arrive all at once,” according to the posting.

Under the summer arrangement, the first ferry will leave Carroway at 7:10 a.m., followed by weekday departures at 9:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4:00 p.m., and 6:10 p.m. Return service from Onancock will operate at corresponding intervals, though harbor staff noted that exact departures may vary slightly depending on tide, cargo balance, engine temperament, and “general dock readiness.”

Saturday service will include an additional mid-evening run for the first time in four seasons. Sunday crossings remain limited, in keeping with what the notice describes as “historic local preference and the practical need for pause.”

Travelers are advised to arrive at least 20 minutes before departure, particularly if transporting coolers, bicycles, folded chairs, shell buckets, wrapped parcels, potted plants, boxed fans, uncertain poultry, or any item likely to prompt discussion at the ramp. Passengers traveling with items of uncertain classification are advised to declare them prior to boarding.

As in previous years, boarding priority will be given to emergency vehicles, utility crews, medical travelers, and residents carrying supplies “clearly intended for legitimate household continuation.”

Questions remain, however, regarding the new “conditional courtesy departure” listed at 8:40 p.m. on Fridays.

Terminal staff described that crossing as available “when warranted,” though no further definition was provided. One harbor employee explained only that the run would occur in situations where enough people were present, the vessel was in order, and conditions suggested that “sending them over would be better than having them remain where they were.”

Parking rules at the mainland lot remain unchanged, though drivers are reminded not to leave vehicles across marked shell lines or in spaces reserved for clergy, fuel transfer, or those “actively engaged in official marine concerns.”

Fares will hold at last season’s rates. Children under six ride free when accompanied by an adult capable of accounting for them at both points of departure. Baggage allowances remain generous but not open-ended.

The ferry authority has also clarified that not every missed crossing qualifies as a hardship. Final departure timing remains subject to conditions and general agreement.

“Summer service is expanded for convenience, not certainty,” a representative said. “We encourage all passengers to plan responsibly, remain visible when waiting, and avoid assuming that a vessel seen from a distance is necessarily theirs.”

A laminated version of the schedule will remain posted at both terminals through Labor Day, unless displaced by wind, salt, or revisions.

Residents wishing to receive updates in advance are encouraged to call the harbor office during posted hours, though callers should understand that the answer may depend in part on when they ask.
